Characterising the transdisciplinary research approach

Despite increasing attention and calls for transdisciplinary (TD) working in engineering, a lack of clarity surrounding what constitutes TD research approach persists. This paper aims to reduce ambiguity by characterising identifying when the should or not be used. Specifically, answers question: might it beneficial take rather than single, multi interdisciplinary approach? Survey responses from twenty-eight authors (50%) who presented papers at 28th ISTE International Conference on Transdisciplinary Engineering (TE2021) were qualitatively analysed. Findings show is complex problem-solving. New understanding reveals that could used evidence scientific social impact, context determines appropriateness adoption. However, even where adoption deemed appropriate, institutional barriers may exist. In other words, work environment (culture) which we do our research, determine if any meaningful benefits are, are realised. Lessons engineering education discuss how institutionalise TD, future engineers researchers taught socialised competencies needed research.
